Castlebar Nursing Home

At the time of our inspection 55 people were using the service. – the service is performing badly and we've taken enforcement action against the provider of the service. With the passing of my father, it was important for us to find my mother a good residential home.

The family was always made welcome at Buchan House and communication between us and the home was very good. Thank you for your commitment and ability to care. My husband really enjoyed his stay at Neath House. I would certainly recommend it to anyone else who needed respite. He is calm and relaxed, and all his carers have done a tremendous job making him feel very welcome in his new home. We simply would not want Dad to be anywhere else.

About quality of care

We received mostly positive comments about the care and support provided, with people saying they felt well looked after. However, we observed that some processes in place did not always respect a person’s privacy and people were not always treated with respect and compassion. We observed during handover that discussions about people’s care were had where other people could overhear the conversation. People who used the service told us they liked the staff.

My aunt is happy and settled and I know I will be contacted with updates about her that cannot wait until my visit. I have recommended Etheldred to a number of people. Dovecote Manor has an open house policy where family and friends can visit as often as they like.

What people are saying about Castlebar Nursing Home

During this inspection, we found that the provider had taken action to address these issues. Standards of cleanliness and infection control had improved since our last inspection. Care plans were in place and on the whole identified people’s care and support needs. The focus of the inspection was to follow up on previous concerns we had raised in June 2014 about respecting people that used the service and care and support provided to people. The registered provider had systems and processes in place to protect people from harm.

Assessments were undertaken to identify if people were at risk of developing pressure ulcers, falling or becoming malnourished. However, we could not be assured that appropriate preventative measures were in place to protect people from identified risks. This included ensuring people’s behaviour and health was appropriately monitored to identify signs of infection or deterioration in their health. The summary describes what people using the service, their relatives and the staff told us, what we observed and the records we looked at.

I could not be more thrilled with level of service and professionalism at Etheldred. Everything had the feel of being incredibly well looked after. The staff came across fantastically well and were happy to answer our questions about the place and the care that would be given.

That said, the Government still expect care providers to facilitate visits in a risk-managed way to ensure that the people living and working in our care homes remain as safe as possible. This means our care homes continue to need to demonstrate safe and effective management of visiting at all times. At Excelcare, we continue to do all we can to keep residents, visitors, and team members as safe as possible.

The care home, which offers respite, residential, dementia, nursing, and end of life care, was struggling financially before Covid-19, an Excelcare spokesperson said. To the staff, residents and friends of Caiseal Geal Care Home, wishing you all a safe, happy and healthy new ... All the people we spoke to told us that staff listened to and consulted them in decisions about their care and daily lives at the home and that staff respected their wishes. Staff felt well supported and able to make suggestions to improve the service. A recent contract monitoring report from the local authority identified that feedback from people who used the service and relatives was generally positive.

Staffing

I have spent two weeks here and have been able to relax and regain my physical and mental strength. The staff are lovely, plenty of privacy and respect. I would recommend Fitzwilliam House to anybody who is thinking of coming here. My mother's poor appetite perked up no end during her stay, thanks to delicious, nourishing meals. Everyone shows the residents the greatest respect and are unfailingly good-humoured, approachable and understanding.

We observed that there were enough staff on duty to support people with their care, support and social care needs. The registered provider arranged training, induction, appraisal and supervision for staff. This helped them to gain the knowledge and skills to care and support people. The service responded to the needs of people in a way, which was exemplary. Staff showed they understood people’s care and support needs and responded to them by delivering person centred care. People had creatively organised activities that met their preferences or needs and helped them to develop new interests.

Our day room is bright and airy and used for all kinds of activities and events. We also have a prayer room and visitors’ tearoom. We spoke with six people using the service or their family members.

He is well cared for and treated by the staff with kindness and consideration. Our caring team of 12 nurses and 24 healthcare assistants provide 24-hour care. Peaceful location, nice outdoor spacious grounds with a lovely private courtyard for residents and visitors. There were various quality monitoring arrangements put in place by the provider, including audits and internal visits, surveys and meetings for people using the service and their representatives.
